Pay Your Dues

Why are dues important?

MHC DC is hard at work planning meetings and events for club members. These efforts can’t happen without your help. Your club membership dues enable MHC DC to plan exciting new opportunities, subsidize program costs, and provide scholarship opportunities for students.

Recommended dues are based on your graduating year.

up to 10 years out

For classes up to 10 years out, dues are $18.37 (pretty clever, eh?)

11 - 49 years out

11 to 49 years out, dues are $35

50+ years out

For classes 50 years out or more, dues are complimentary

Edward R. Murrow Memorial Scholarship Background & Update - May 2024

The Edward R. Murrow Memorial Scholarship was established in the 1960s by members of the Mount Holyoke Club of DC, and alums in the group continue to make contributions to the fund to this day. It is awarded each year to a student from the Washington, DC area who has a strong academic record.

Edward R. Murrow, a broadcast journalist for CBS who died in 1965, was married to Janet Brewster Murrow '33. The Archives and Special Collections at Mount Holyoke holds some of Edward R. Murrow's papers, including correspondence between the Murrows. After moving to South Hadley in 1965, Janet Murrow worked at the Mount Holyoke Art Museum until her retirement in 1977. She served as the museum's director, and also headed the museum's Friends of Art program. She worked in the larger community as well, helping to establish WGBY, the Springfield, Massachusetts, public television affiliate. She died of heart failure on December 18, 1998, in a life care center in Needham, Massachusetts.

Our electronic financial records don't go back to the 1960s, but since 1980, the Club has contributed $33,384 to the scholarship fund. Several individuals have contributed directly to the fund, including Janet Murrow who gave $5,000.

The current fund values are:

Total contributed amount as of 4/30/2023 = $57,173

Market value as of 4/30/2023 = $208,840

Estimated income available to award in scholarship aid in 2023 = $8,556

FAQs

How are the recipients selected?

The Associate Director of Stewardship and Donor Relations selects the students matched to endowed scholarships each year

Are the recipients from Greater Washington, DC?

The Associate Director of Stewardship and Donor Relations will always try to select a student who is from Washington, D.C. proper. If that isn't possible, they will look for a student as geographically close to D.C. as possible. In looking at the historical assignments, we have also assigned students from Falls Church and Fairfax, Virginia, as well as Baltimore and Bowie, Maryland.

Is the student a first-year student?

The scholarship is not restricted to a first-year student, so the recipient can be from any year

Is the scholarship awarded to a student for four years?

Unless a scholarship agreement specifically requires it, we do not have a policy to assign a student to a scholarship for all four years. In many cases, however, we do reassign the same student from year to year. This scholarship fund does not require the same recipient for four years.
